The Banana Sector in Ecuador: A Perspective from Exportation
Bananas are considered the most exported fruit in the world both in terms of volume and economic value, and they are the third most important export product in our economy. However, it is urgent that in this revolution of innovation and knowledge, we apply science and technology to become more competitive in the global market.
Starting in the 1950s, the so-called banana boom erupted, which turned Ecuador into the leading exporter of bananas internationally. At that time, the United States and the European Union had a high demand for bananas, initially met with fruit from Central America. By the 1960s, Ecuadorian bananas covered 30% of the international demand. This rapid growth was a result of available labor, as well as the generosity and fertility of the soil, contributing to that distinct flavor that has earned Ecuador numerous awards and quality certifications worldwide.
Do you know the banana-producing regions of Ecuador?
Ecuador, known as the land of the four "worlds" (based on its four differentiated climatic zones: Amazon, Andes, Coast, and Galapagos), is the world's leading exporter of bananas. However, only 3 out of the 24 administrative regions in which Ecuador is divided produce the majority of bananas.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Ecuador (MAGAP), these are:
Los Ríos (37.14%) is the province with the highest banana production.
Guayas (32.25%)
El Oro (24.12%)
